Strada Contractors Limited management and operatives have been involved in the marine industry since the early 1970s.

During 1999 Strada Contractors secured an M.O.D. 4 year enabling contract with ongoing extensions at H.M. Naval Base Portsmouth, involving all aspects of marine corrosion prevention and specialist coating systems to all types of ships including G.R.P. vessels. Our success in H.M. Naval base has broadened our client base to include Vosper Thorneycroft, Qinetiq, Royal Fleet Auxiliary and Devonport Naval Base. Strada has also successfully completed projects for the Scientific Research Centre at Porton Down.

We have also carried out blast cleaning and coatings to a variety of marine based projects such as jetties, link spans, defence walls and dolphins. The Company has long experience in the application of specialist anti-fouling and non-skid systems. The hazardous nature of marine work requires the Company to maintain a high level of staff training in safety and environmental issues, coupled with a very high standard of workmanship.

Deck Preservation on Island Class Vessel

This project was completed at H.M. Naval base Portsmouth. The existing non-slip coatings were removed by mechanical scabbling and track blasting to a surface standard of SA2.5. The coating system then applied was a 2 pack epoxy non-slip applied to 1035 dry film thickness whilst also reinstating the pad eye margins around fixtures and fittings on deck.

Client: Vosper Thorneycroft

Surface treatment & coatings

Surface treatment to pilings by dry grit blasting followed by applying an epoxy coating system.

All the existing coatings and corrosion were removed and the steelwork cleaned back to SA2.5.

Works completed to existing pilings and jetty steelwork. All steelwork was blast cleaned to SA2.5 Swedish standard and a marine protective coating system applied. The works were programmed around the tide times with the coating system being of submersable qualities to enable curing under water.

Cleansing Stations onboard RFA ships

The cleansing stations onboard R.F.A. Ships Argus, Sir Percival and Sir Galahad were in need of complete refurbishment. The initial specification was for complete removal of the existing coating system by grit blasting. However, because of the very tight timescale and the fact that extensive mechanical works (i.e. new shower & fittings) had to be carried out, it was clearly apparent that it would be impossible to complete all the cleansing stations before the vessels' sailing dates. Therefore a new system had to be found and put into operation at very short notice. This was achieved by co-operation between Strada technical staff, The Defence Procurement Agency, Sea Technology Group and M.O.D. Abbey Wood. A system was found whereby all corrosion was removed, the existing coatings were sealed and a complete new paint system was applied. This entailed close co-operation between Strada painting team and the fabrication/welding team. A "round the clock" work schedule enabled the ships to meet their departure dates.

R.F.A. Argus/Painting and Cleaning

Extensive cleaning and painting contract carried out to the poop deck and main cargo deck on the Argus, which included the bulk and deck head. All fixtures and fittings were prepared and re-coated. This is only a small part of the type of cleaning works that we carry out. Ongoing cleaning works are also carried out to accommodation areas, deep clean to engine rooms and bilge areas pumped out and cleaned.

These works were completed on a "round the clock" work schedule prior to sailing to the Gulf for the Iraq War, where she served as a hospital ship.
